Furnishing a New Nation
In October 1781 General Washington's Continental army defeated Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, VA. This symbolized the beginning of the end for British colonies in North America. A new sentiment of "Americanism" swept the country which was reflected in its decorative arts.
In Europe the style was changing from the over adorned, scrolling, bulky look of Chippendale; to a more slender look with a lot of veneered surfaces adorned with inlay & marquetry. The Americans followed suit but with their own twist; the American eagle began to appear everywhere.
